The staging of the BIEMH has transformed the landscape of Bilbao, Barakaldo and the surrounding locations.The participation in the trade-show of thousands of manufacturers and buyers from all over the world makes it one of the top business-tourism events in the Basque Country. It is expected to have an economic impact of around €36 million in terms of GDP.
Hotel and restaurant bookings and trade at retail and leisure establishments in general will be at peak levels for the year on and around the dates of the BIEMH. Indeed, hotel occupancy on the middle and final days of the event is set to be around 100%, and this year all the accommodation package deals on offer have sold out.
At the BEC various teams have been at work for over a year in the commercial, visitors, communication and services areas, but activities will be focused particularly on the period from the start date for erection work on the 20th until June 11th. Over these three weeks more than 1000 stand assembly workers, 7000 employees of exhibiting firms and around 600 staff from the exhibition centre itself will be involved in the erection work, staging and subsequent dismantling for this major event. On the logistics side, 1800 light vehicles, 840 trucks and 24 large cranes will be involved in the work.
